Tintern: Electricians discover ‘secret tunnels’ near Abbey
A mysterious network of tunnels was accidentally discovered in the Wye Valley in Monmouthshire.
The previously unknown structure was found by a team of electrical engineers near Tintern Abbey from the 12th century.
The team was digging a trench on a client’s property in an area of outstanding natural beauty near the border between Wales and England when they were digging the tunnels.
“Shortly after the excavation began, the excavation team made the extraordinary discovery of what it originally thought was a cave,” said Allyn Gore, engineer at Western Power who led the team.
According to Western Power, the tunnel network was not shown on any map and no local residents or authorities were aware of it.
