The Quietus | Information | Mild In The Attic Particulars Compilation Of ’80s Japanese Music

Light In The Attic has a new compilation on the way as part of its Japan Archival Series.

Somewhere in between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds Of Japan 1980–1988 comprises 14 tracks of Japanese music from the 80s, covering ambient, experimental pop and electronic music. The label says the compilation combines the sounds explored in last year’s Kankyō Ongaku compilation, which focused on Japanese ambient music, and the two Pacific Breeze compilations of Japanese city pops released in 2019 and 2020 . She was curated by Dublab’s Mark with “Frosty” McNeill and Light In The Attic’s Yosuke Kitazawa.

The track list includes tracks by Dip In The Pool, the Mkwaju Ensemble (whose line-up includes Midori Takada), ambient artist Yoshio Ojima and pop / soul singer Noriko Miyamoto. According to Light In The Attic, this is the first time much of this material has been published outside of Japan.

You can listen to clips and check the full track listing through the Light In The Attic website.

Light In The Attic will release Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980-1988 on January 22, 2020.
