Solar panels to be installed on Mount Athos, reducing oil and wood dependence at monasteries

The regional director of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, signed the final approval for the installation of solar cells (photovoltaics) in monasteries on Mount Athos after the preparatory work was completed.

Each of the 21 monasteries and the associated houses are equipped with individual systems that reduce the overall dependence of the purely male monastery community on oil and wood.

The project, which is estimated at EUR 13 million, is financed by the European Union for the region and is intended to reduce energy consumption by 4 million kilowatt hours per year.

All 21 systems have a production capacity of 2,635 kilowatts of peak power.

Visit to the holy and sacred Mount Athos

In 2018, GCT spoke to 23-year-old Dimitri from Sydney, Australia, who visited Mt. Athos and experienced a journey like no other.

“It’s something every man has to do in his life, especially for someone who is spiritual. You need to experience Mount Athos for yourself to understand the benefits you will get on a spiritual, mental and emotional level. “
