Skegness electricians assist DIY SOS crew remodel house of household hit by tragedy

A team of Skegness electricians helped transform the home of a tragedy Scunthorpe family on an episode of DIY SOS.

On the BBC One show, the team completely renovated the home of the Blanchard family, who suffered two tragic deaths while living in the apartment.

In 2007, seven-year-old Natasha tragically died after riding a mini motorcycle into the family’s garage and hitting her head.

Just nine years later, Father Paul died of cardiac arrest in the family’s conservatory.

This left mother Caroline alone to look after her son Reece and daughter Paige, which meant she was unable to take care of her home.

More than 300 local builders and traders participated in the project to remodel the Blanchard family’s home, including a team of electricians from Skegness.

Wayne Fothergill, along with two other electricians who work at Wayne’s company WAF Electrical, applied to be part of the project after promoting it on social media and says it was an incredibly emotional experience.

The 41-year-old said: “There were four teams of electricians participating and we were there for the duration of the project.

“We did the first fix before the cameras were there and then went back to the second and third fixes when they were filming.

“It’s difficult in some ways, because there’s a lot to stop and start filming, so the job can really take longer than it needs to be.

“But it was really great to be part of it, it was very emotional.

“It’s very similar to television, where there’s a great camaraderie between everyone involved in the project.

“We made really good friends with some of the other artisans we met on the project.

“It feels like everyone is there for the same reason. It was a very healthy experience.”

The DIY SOS team completely renovated the house for the family, removing the daily memories of what they lost and hopefully changing their lives for the better.

Caroline and Reece also spoke about the impact the loss of Paul and Natasha had on the family.

The construction was one of the largest and most intense projects the team has worked on. The house, garden and garage were completely changed in five days.
