Brno, January 6th (BD) – An important new step towards sustainable Brno this year will be the installation of solar panels on the roofs of buildings in the city. The CZK 1.2 billion project was announced this week by First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-CSL) and Filip Leder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SAKO Brno City Company

“We consider the roofs of buildings to be the best place to install solar panels. Currently, we have selected over 100 buildings with an area of ​​120,000 square meters and a size of 15 soccer fields. Last year, in cooperation with the scientific institute Czech Globe and experts from BUT, we created an interactive exposure map, which we can use to evaluate which roofs are best suited for generating renewable energies. Our goal is to create a virtual power plant that everyone in Brno can supply with electricity. We want to set the purchase prices in such a way that it is really worthwhile for people and companies to invest in photovoltaic and photothermal technologies, ”said Hladík.

City-owned buildings, buildings assigned to city districts, and communal company buildings have priority for the photovoltaic modules. In the future, brownfield sites and suitable private facilities are planned, and the city would like to involve private owners and associations in the program.

“The total output of the panels on the roofs of Brno should reach 40 MWh, while we estimate the expected annual electricity generation from solar modules supported by the city to be around 43 GWh, which will result in annual emissions savings of at least 36,000 tons of CO2,” said Leder, who is responsible for the development of the photovoltaic system.

The project also includes the construction of an electrode boiler and heat storage in the SAKO Brno complex on Jedovnická. Individual production sources are connected to the aggregation unit and fed into the distribution system, ie the city’s “solar power plant”. However, most of the energy is consumed on site, and the continued energy flows are fed into the grid and traded.

“With this project we will combine the advantages of photovoltaics with our waste incineration plant. As a result, the city of Brno becomes a leader in renewable energies without burdening the distribution and transmission system, ”explained Leder, adding that“ photovoltaic power plant projects on unused building roofs do not occupy valuable green or arable land. ”

Implementation of this project will begin later this year. Around half of the investments are financed from subsidy programs of the Ministry of the Environment, in particular from the modernization fund.
