Off-Grid House Has Its Own Wind Turbine and Solar Panels

For those wandering spirits looking to lead a low impact lifestyle, self-sufficient, off-grid homes provide housing in remote locations. Inspired by alternative forms of living with lower environmental impact, the architects of the Czech company Pin-Up Houses designed an upcycling shipping container that has its own wind turbine, three solar panels and a rainwater collection system.

The recently completed off-grid house Gaia is based on a shipping container with a size of 6 x 2.4 m and costs 21,000 US dollars. It offers full off-grid functionality, with the electricity coming from a solar module on the roof with three 165 W modules. There is also the 400W wind turbine.

Both power sources are connected to batteries and the power statistics can be remotely monitored via a mobile app. The website states that a high voltage inverter can add a higher voltage from 110 to 230.

All of this enables the house to use its power from the power of wind and sun, so that residents can live independently and comfortably practically anywhere.

The rainwater storage tank holds up to 1,000 liters of water and has a filter and a water pump. In order to mitigate the poor thermal performance of shipping containers, the architects added an additional roof screen made of galvanized metal in addition to the spray foam insulation.

The house is accessed through a sliding glass door, and the house is perfectly put together with the interior made of spruce plywood.

A small kitchenette, a living room that takes up a lot of space, a bathroom and a bedroom offer residents everything they could ever need. The heat is provided by a wood stove.

Joshua Woodsman of Pin-Up Houses told New Atlas that while the house was built as an experiment and is not for sale, it could be sold based on demand.

Those handy enough could also try building the off-grid home themselves by purchasing the structure’s plans for $ 190. There are also plenty of container houses that can make for cheap and efficient homes.
